TB is a serious infectious disease of the lungs caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis (CDC). It is readily transmitted from person to person via droplets from the throat and lungs of people with an active respiratory disease. A person needs only a small number of droplets from a cough, sneeze, talk or spit of an infected person to be infected. When not treated properly, TB can be fatal.
